Squares

Squares is a game that involves connecting letters in a grid into meaningful words according to the rules of up, down, left, right, or diagonal. Solving the day's puzzles of different lengths will correspond to the number of points you receive. Words must have at least four letters.

To see the variety of connections, look at the puzzle from many different angles.

You will have 3 to 5 hints when the light bulb button under the playing field lights up. Click on it to get the first letter.

How to play Squares

Use the mouse to drag to connect to the square grid.

The game controls are simple, just like in many other word games. Still, solving the 4x4 grid and finding all valid words of different lengths that it hides isn't easy! Luckily, the game offers handy hints and features to help you in tricky moments.

Here are extra details on how to handle this word-based puzzle.

Understand and follow the rules

Use at least four letters. Squares does not accept words containing three letters or fewer. Aim to form words with 4 letters or more for points; longer words always yield better scores.

Connect neighboring tiles. Each letter must touch the previous letter horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. It’s impossible to connect 2 letters that aren't adjacent.

Never reuse a tile in one word. Players cannot select the same square twice while tracing a single word, whether it’s a long or short word.

Use a tile in different words. A letter tile can appear in multiple words, as long as they are separate guesses.

Choose valid words. The game generally accepts common English words while rejecting entries such as proper names and abbreviations. Also, it doesn't count “already found” words.

Use hints when you get stuck

Each puzzle in Squares provides three hints, each highlighting the starting tile of an undiscovered word and the next tile in its path. You should always try to solve the easier words first and save your hints for the final few words, when the grid becomes harder to read.

Handy Tips for Finding More Words

Scan everything starting at first. At the beginning, scan the whole board to see what letters you have and their positions. This helps you understand your grid before going for any word connections.

Search diagonally. Check all eight directions around each letter instead of staring vertically or horizontally. Forming a word often mixes directions at once.

Look for common endings. Letter combinations such as -ED, -ER, and -ING may help you discover longer words.

Check the word lengths. Use the target list to determine whether you should search for a short word or a longer one. If your word is rejected, quickly check its spelling before trying another one.

Rotate the grid. When stuck, turn the whole board left or right to refresh your view. This way, you may find words more easily.
